Manic Pop Thrill
January 10, 2007The name of this blog of course isn’t original. If you don’t already know, it is nicked from the title of the debut LP from That Petrol Emotion in 1986.
As a descriptor of the contents the record title (in the singular) pretty much covers all bases.
Principle songwriter was Sean O’Neill aka John of the Undertones and although the tunes were often much harder edged than the ‘Tones (partly due to O’Neill’s introduction to Captain Beefheart and Pere Ubu by guitarist Reamann O’Gormain) there still are plenty of pop gems to illustrate that he hadn’t lost his melodic flair.
TPE ultimately made 5 studio LPs but their peripatetic career (their records appeared on 4 different labels) ultimately failed to produce any real commercial reward. Having said that all the LPs are worth having and most are still available commercially for example here or here or even here
And no doubt elsewhere too.
So, taken from the debut LP, here’s a track which scores pretty highly on the Manic, Pop and Thrills ratings:
That Petrol Emotion – Can’t Stop
More info about TPE here or on a Myspace site here (no music though)
