Crawling Home

Sauchiehall Crawl

Sunday night’s offered a decent bill of bands, some familiar to me and some new. The big question was how many of these bands you could actually manage to see given that the schedule warned about queuing in plenty of time to get into venues.

It’s not a good sign therefore when, in collecting my ticket from the ABC, I’m sucked into a fairly long queue. A lot of the t-shirts however don’t look right and it turns out to be principally a queue for Flogging Molly whoever they might be.

In the end the numbers attending the three venues weren’t enough to generate any queues. If you’d wanted to, you could probably have caught a part of the set of every band on display. That sort of buffet menu however doesn’t appeal – I had specific bands I wanted to see and ultimately it (more or less) worked out.

It appears to me however that timing is crucial with these events if you want to maximise the amount of music you hear. Whilst the Nice’n’Sleazys timetable slipped from the off, the neighbouring Beat Club appeared to be running on time. Which meant that I caught only a fraction of We Were Promised Jetpacks before heading off to De Rosa. It probably also meant that I could have caught most of the Twilight Sad’s set at the ABC2 before heading back to Nice’n’Sleazys for the Phantom Band, particularly since the Phantoms took to the stage almost 20 minutes later than scheduled. Hindsight however is a wonderful thing.

Had I managed to catch even part of the Twilight Sad it would probably have been a perfect evening. In the end though (particularly since I was never going to go to the after show) it ended up as a fairly expensive ticket for a number of bands you could expect to see in one show. Next time out I’ll certainly try and be a bit more ambitious but, as it undoubtedly grows in popularity, I’m sure queues will also become part of the Crawl.
