I talked about being approached by people promoting bands before and my inability/ reluctance to process what appear to be mass mail-outs. However when I recently got an email from someone who had obviously actually read the blog, I treated it a little more seriously.

The email was from Rob St John promoting his new EP ‘Like Alchemy’ and I decided to give the EP a good listen. Now, regular readers will know that acoustic based songs don’t necessarily jump out at me but perhaps various acoustic shows I’ve seen over the last 18 months or so have started to change my mind. Perhaps as I get older it’s becoming less necessary for bands to grab my attention and I’m becoming more patient, but whatever, ‘Like Alchemy’ is excellent.

The four songs all repay your full attention if you’re prepared to give it. They’re not immediate but instead are all fairly intricate song which reveal plenty of depth. And I’m certain I’m not doing their mournful beauty justice here at all.

So points of reference? Well, it was my comments on Rob’s other band Eagleowl which identified MPT to him and Rob definitely is coming from a similar place on the 4 tracks on the EP. Another point of reference for me is Micah P Hinson’s more polished work, not least because there is some degree of vocal similarity.

Interested? Try the lead track -

The EP is released on Fife Kills next week. If you want to get a hold of a copy then go to Rob’s Myspace and follow the instructions there.

More alchemy next perhaps.
