Lloyd from Peenko has just announced the result of the annual Scottish BAMS (Blogs and Music Sites) poll for the best Scottish Album of the Year.
As was the case in 2011, 2012 provided a clear winner. And I’m delighted to say that, for the first time, some of the MPT votes cast actually went to the winner which is … Meursault’s ‘Something for the Weakened.’
As is becoming customary for Neil Pennycook and co, LP number 3 marked another change in direction. After 2010’s harsh ‘All Creatures Make Merry’, ‘Something for the Weakened’ was a lush affair replete with strings.
It’s a really fine record yet I couldn’t help being just slightly disappointed in it. Why? I was actually expecting it to be completely mindblowing after hearing most of the songs live for the first time at the Caves last summer but it’s not quite managed that.
But it’s still a more than worthy winner and the good part is that I’m convinced that Meursault are more than capable of delivering that mindblowing album before too long.
The question now is whether or not Meursault can follow in the footsteps of Bill Wells and Aidan Moffat. Last year after winning the BAMS with Everything’s Getting Older’ they also went on to pick up the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year award. Can Meursault do the same?
