2010 Live

Right – I am going to do another 2010 piece because I really enjoyed my live shows last year.

Over the last 12 months I took in 29 different shows and caught  83 different  performances to some extent (although usually in their entirety).

I saw 9 bands more than once (occasionally because bands were on a bill rather than as a conscious decision) with Kid Canaveral and TV21 stalked on no fewer than 6 occasions each. I managed to catch both The Phantom Band and FOUND 3 times whilst I also saw Cancel The Astronauts, Come on Gang!, The Last Battle, Ballboy and The Oates Field twice.

I find it really difficult to decide who was the best live act of the year. Perhaps if I’d seen the Burns Unit half a dozen times, I might have picked them because the Queen’s Hall show was wonderful but will settle with a tie for MPT Best Live Act between TV21 and Kid Canaveral. (Surprise, surprise!)

Any round up needs a good list (or two) so here are MPT’s 10 best performances (there’s only 1 allowed per band otherwise the list would be clogged up with Kid C and TV21!). In reverse order by date:

TV21 – HMV Picture House, Edinburgh – 29th December 2010 (review)

Kid Canaveral  – The Lot, Edinburgh – 18th December (review)

Cancel The Astronauts – The Lot, Edinburgh – 18th December (review)

Arcade Fire – S.E.C.C., Glasgow – 12th December 2010 (review)

The Phantom Band – Oran Mor, Glasgow – 21st November 2010 (review)

Meursault – Dexter’s, Dundee – 4th November 2010 (review)

Fuzzy Lights   – Dexter’s, Dundee – 4th November 2010 (review)

Withered Hand – Cellardyke Town Hall – 20th August (review)

The Burns Unit – Queen’s Hall, Edinburgh – 9th August (review)

Spare Snare – Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline, 22nd May 2010 (review)

Taking a broader perspective, the 10 best shows of the year in terms of the bill, venue etc, (duplicate bands allowed) again in reverse order by date were:

Scars / TV21 / Ballboy / Shock and Awe – HMV Picture House, Edinburgh – 29th December 2010 (review)

Kid Canaveral’s Christmas Baubles – Ballboy / Kid Canaveral / Come on Gang! / King Creosote / Cancel The Astronauts / The Last Battle / Gummi Bako – The Lot, Edinburgh – 18th December (review)

Meursault / Fuzzy Lights /  Strangers Almanac / Esperi – Dexter’s, Dundee – 4th November 2010 (review)

Shouting at Wildlife LP Launch – Kid Canaveral / Come On Gang! / The Scottish Enlightenment – Roxy Arthouse, Edinburgh – Saturday 3rd July 2010 (review)

Peenko vs Aye Tunes – Kid Canaveral, Mitchell Museum and Campfires in Winter – Captains’ Rest, Glasgow – 30th April (review)

Chemikal Underground 15th Birthday – The Phantom Band / Lord Cutglass / The Unwinding Hours / Emma Pollock / Aidan Moffat / Zoey van Goey / Adrian Crowley – ABC, Glasgow – 31st January (review)

Yeah I can count – that’s 11. But it wasn’t easy!

So, apart from the delayed second podcast, that’s 2010 done. A new record for 2011 tomorrow.

  1. Jim says:

Chuffed to bits our gig made the list, even though it was the bands that did all the hard work!

  2. Couldn’t go wrong with that bil could you, Jim?
