There’s been some stuff lingering in the inbox for a while now that I quite like so I thought I’d try and catch up with that over the next few days.
First up is Spare Snare’s Jan Burnett and his collaboration project The Grand Gestures.
Collaborators on the record are Celie Byrne, Calamateur, Calamity Horse, Sanjeev Kohli, Jill O’Sullivan, Dave Burnett and Barry Gibson and an 8 track LP will be released on 28th May. There’s a special one-off launch on Friday 1st June at King Tut’s in Glasgow.
Half the LP’s available for a listen on Soundcloud. Whilst it’s difficult to judge a record on half of its songs, other than a certain lo-fi charm, it doesn’t have much in common with Spare Snare.
‘Living By The Seaside’ has an entirely appropriate chilly ambience, Meanwhile O’Sullivan delivers spoken word verses and sung choruses in ‘Deer In A Crosshair’ a tale of retribution. ‘I Wonder What Chris De Burgh Is Doing Right Now’ is almost the polar opposite compring hilarious and nonsense speculation about the private live of the titular MOR star.
‘There’s No Place Like Home’, may start off with some atonal electronics but is perhaps as representative of the bunch as any.
