Kate and David Canaveral look back on 2012 as the MPT Inquisition draws to a close.

Your Music

Your own musical highlight of the year?

D: Our first show in Edinburgh for 8 months, in August there. It was great to play a lot of our new album and a relief to see that people hadn’t forgot about us.

K: Finally getting to listen to a mastered and totally finished version of our new album.

Favourite performance of the year?

K: Away Game Festival on Eigg. We played at 4am on the first day and everyone was just completely going for it. Amazing! Or the Long Division Festival in Wakefield – we were kind of bowled over by the reception we got there.

What’s the one thing that went wrong in 2012 you’d like to fix?

K: David got really sick while we were over in France doing some shows and couldn’t enjoy all the delicious food and drink – the rest of us ate more on his behalf. I imagine dragging himself on stage for the gigs wasn’t that much fun either! Hopefully we can fix that by heading back sometime next year!

What you gonna be doing next year?

D: Touring the hell out of our new album ‘Now That You are a Dancer’ after it comes out on Fence Records on 4 March 2013.

K: What he said.

Others’ Music

3 songs or LPs you’ve listened to the most in 2012?

D: Out of Sight, Out of Town – Standard Fare

K: Rozi Plain – Joined Sometimes Unjoined & This Many Boyfriends – This Many Boyfriends

Best gig attended?

D: Grandaddy at the ABC in Glasgow.

K: Morrissey at the Usher Hall. I’m a bit of a Morrissey super fan and it was the best I have ever seen him.

Biggest surprise of 2012?

K: That Morrissey was the best I’d ever seen him.

Biggest letdown of 2012?

K: May as well make it a Mozza triple now! That Morrissey was playing the same night as we were in Burlington, Vermont in October. A place where, we were reliably informed by all that lived there, NOTHING ever normally happens. Also, his opinions on various things are a constant letdown. MORRISSEY.

Anything and everything

Event of 2012

D: The Away Game Festival on the Isle of Eigg/Eye O’ the Dug Festival in St Andrews

K: Yep.

Lowpoint of 2012

D: Getting very ill on tour in France.

Hero of 2012

K: Michael Forbes. Donald Trump can f**k off.

Villain of 2012

D: Spotify

K: Donald Trump (see above)

Favourite place of 2012

K: Madrid. Everyone should go.

Favourite book of 2012

K: I’ve not totally finished it yet, so I guess the ending might be terrible but I’d be very surprised. And also I think it’s from 2011… but The Sisters Brothers by Patrick DeWitt is the best book I’ve read in ages.
