I Didn’t Realise It Had An On Switch – The Strangers Almanac live

The Strangers Almanac – Cupar Arts Festival, Castlehill Centre, Cupar – 8th October 2013

Last night saw three quarters of the MP family take in our second show of the week at the Cupar Arts Festival with an intimate acoustic show by the Strangers Almanac at the festival hub.

With just one act on the bill we got two short sets of their gentle acoustic pop. As on the previous two occasions I’ve seen them, they performed as a duo with Gord on acoustic guitar and vocals and Avril backing him on violin, mandolin and vocals. And switching on things!

It was an enjoyable hour or so with most of the material drawn from this year’s ‘Those Tremendous Mountains’ album with a couple of Eels covers thrown in for good measure.

Whilst on record their sound can on occasion be a bit louder, the simple live arrangements put the focus squarely on the songwriting.  And it was a lovely set.

Neither Mrs MPT nor MPK2 had heard TSA before and whilst I expected Y to enjoy it, I was impressed that S did too. He clearly has a decent attention span for a teenager!

Our next festival engagement is the Withered Hand/Jo Foster double bill at Elmwood on Friday.

‘Those Tremendous Mountains’ is available on a name your own price deal from the Strangers Almanac Bandcamp.
