Song of the Week #27 – We Were Promised Jetpacks

Although it’s nearly 2 years since they started playing new songs live, the first release from We Were Promised Jetpacks since 2014 only arrived at the tail end of last week.

‘Hanging In’ is the first single from upcoming album ‘The More I Sleep, The Less I Dream’ which will be released on new label Big Scary Monsters on 14th September. And, although initially not that immediate, the song has been on repeat over the last couple of days – and it seems to get better with every play.

‘Hanging In’ seems a logical progression from last LP ‘Unravelling’ – it shares that album’s expansive sense of melodic drama yet feels like it’s still stretching what Jetpacks are capable of. And there’s even a sneaky wee nod to ‘A Design for Life’!

I know everyone’s (rightly) getting excited about the new Twilight Sad single at the moment but, for me, this is even better. One of the songs of the year so far.

On the basis of ‘Hanging In’ and the tracks previewed at Sneaky Pete’s last year, I’m looking forward immensely to the new album.

In support of the new album, the band have lined up a massive run of American dates but also a more limited run of shows in the UK and Europe including the undernoted 3 dates in Scotland:

14 November – ABERDEEN – The Lemon Tree
15 November – GLASGOW – St Luke’s
17 November – EDINBURGH – The Old Dr Wells Baths

Myself and MPK2 are already booked up for St Luke’s.

Oh and here’s a wee bonus pic from 2007!
