So I’ve finally got round to plugging the last gap in the SotW schedule with ‘Lost Faith’ by Bob Mould, taken from new LP ‘Sunshine Rock’.
The album continues Bob’s career renaissance which started several years ago with ‘Silver Age’ although there’s been a couple of weird things about the recent run of LPs. Rule 1 -, I’m usually not that keen on the singles on first listen and (Rule 2) I always think initially that this LP is the one to break the run. And I always end up loving the songs and admit that I was wrong about the new record.
‘Sunshine Rock’ catches Bob in a more upbeat mood than normal but I didn’t really warm to the title track until hearing it open the album. Overall there’s maybe a couple of dips on this record but otherwise it’s another strong addition to the Mould/Narducy/Wurster power trio repertoire.
The third single off the album is one of the exceptions to rule 2 above – I loved it from the off and it’s definitely a highlight on the record (not that there aren’t quite a few others). Here’s the highly entertaining video:
The tour in support of ‘Sunshine Rock’ reaches Scotland this weekend with a sold-out show at the Liquid Room in Edinburgh on Saturday 16th.. The Leeds date tomorrow (at the Brudenell) is sold out but the Academy 2 show in Manchester on Sunday still appears to have some tickets left.
